In total there are nearly 500 Confucius Institutes throughout the world and they are non-profit collaborations established to promote Chinese language and culture. Here at Oxford Brookes we are running a range of events and activities from short courses in Mandarin and exhibitions about Chinese culture through to research projects and training in the area of publishing, the specialist focus of our Institute. This is the first Confucius Institute co-established by a university and a publishing company (Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press), and a key aim is to foster Sino-British co-operation in the creative industries.
Publishing is an area in which Oxford Brookes, and the city of Oxford itself, has an enviable international reputation. The University is home to the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies, one of the leading centres for publishing education in the world, which already has strong links in China, including a research co-operation with Peking University. We have many alumni in China working throughout the industry, including at our partner organization, the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press.
