Kathy Hinde
Taking Place: Photography Studio - Richard Hamilton Building - 1715-1845 - 19-MAR-2012 in --
Kathy Hinde’s interdisciplinary approach combines different art forms frequently through collaborations with other practitioners, partnerships with scientists, and input from the audience. She has created video and sound for theatre and live art performances alongside creating installations and site specific work. She has shown work across Europe, Scandinavia, China, Pakistan, USA, Colombia and Brazil.
Kathy has created interactive visual environments that are responsive to live situations and her video work frequently moves away from the screen. Her musical interests embrace various strategies of improvisation, generative systems, and unconventional notation and using adapted, ‘prepared’ or self-made instruments. She has created a number of works combining kinetic sculpture with musical automata, plus online participatory art works.
Previous and current collaborators are many and include: musicians Joanna MacGregor, Joby Burgess, and Maja Ratkje; audio-visual artist i am the mighty jungulator; dancer/choreographers Lotta Melin, Subathra Subramaniam and Jin Xing; composers Stephen Montague, Gabriel Prokofiev, Graham Fitkin, Max De Wardener and most recently composer Will Gregory of the duo Goldfrapp by creating visuals for Gregory’s new Opera “Piccard in Space”.

Visiting researchers from Bath Spa University present their work at the Listening Group
Taking Place: Photography Studio - Richard Hamilton Building in --
The Listening Group welcomes doctoral researchers from Bath Spa University who will discuss their current research interests.
Jon Pigott is a sonic artist whose practice and research looks at sound and technology through electromechanical and kinetic sound sculptures. His work explores a relationship between ‘hard’ materials such as metal and wood, and ‘soft’ materials such as magnetism and electricity within sound making tools and media assemblages. By opening the black box of technology and exploring the intrinsic musicality of these materials, Jon’s work explores past technologies, and critiques present ones used for creating music and sound. Jon has exhibited and presented his work nationally and internationally. He currently also holds an academic position at Cardiff School of Art and Design. Find out more here.
Owen Lloyd is a composer and sound artist whose practice and professional work focus on sound and extra-musical data. Owen has had a long career as a freelance composer and sound designer for a wide variety of media including installations, websites, film, television and games consoles. In the process he has worked on many award winning projects and had work presented at experimental film festivals and exhibitions, in the cinema and on television both nationally and internationally. The main thrust of his practice is the use of data inputs to drive work, producing music with narrative links to sonification. This is an area of research that he is focussing on in his PhD. Shirley Pegna and Kostis Kilymis at the Listening group →
Shirley Pegna presents recent installation work whilst Kostis Kilymis discusses the the use of the mixing desk as an instrument at the Listening group
Shirley Pegna & Kostis Kilymis (SARU)
Taking Place: Photography Studio - Richard Hamilton Building in --
Kostis Kilymis is a musician and artist focusing on feedback systems and representation. He performs under the 'Syndromes' alias, and in open collaborations with a variety of artists. He also curates the 'organized music from thessaloniki' music label. He is currently attending an MA course in Composition & Sonic Art, at Oxford Brookes University. Originally designed to serve a practical purpose in the diffusion of sound, the mixing board has many times in the history of modern music been used as a musical instrument in itself, culminating in the appearance of the "no-input mixing board", i.e. a mixing board that does not rely on other sources to produce sound, but allows for the emergence of electronic feedback through its re-appropriated use. This Listening Group session will briefly look into the historical precedents behind this practice, and also demonstrate the use of the no-input mixing board itself.
