Students are encouraged to develop a broad portfolio of writing and research skills by combining academic and professional writing projects. We cover the history and theory of popular cinemas in the US (classical and contemporary Hollywood), Europe, and East Asia (especially Japanese cinema), and offer modules on advanced screenwriting and professional film cultures.

Teaching is centred around film screenings, seminars, individual tutorials and, in the case of Story Development, intensive writing workshops.

“The strength of the programme lies in the commitment of the staff, the breadth of the programme and the way in which students are encouraged to follow a range of interests.” External examiner’s report, 2011

Students take two taught modules per semester (one compulsory*, which is double credit, one elective+) and write a dissertation (15,000 words) over the summer. Students wishing to undertake a work placement (optional and non-credited) in the film industry in Oxfordshire will receive guidance from the programme team.

Module options are expected to be as follows:

Semester 1

  • Narration in Classical Hollywood Cinema*
  • Popular European Cinema+
  • Professional Film Cultures+

Semester 2

  • Research Methods Seminar*
  • Popular Cinema in East Asia+
  • Story Development+
