Oxford Brookes student short film nominated for awards

Three BSc Digital Media Production students from Oxford Brookes University have been nominated for two awards, following the debut of their short documentary on suicide amongst young adults.

Zeynep Yanar, Ben Walker and James Daly joined together to produce their first ever project as part of an integrated module at Brookes. FullStop is a short documentary that aims to raise awareness of the increase in suicide in the young. The moving piece incorporates an account from an anonymous suicide survivor, a letter from a mother whose sixteen year old son suddenly died from suicide, as well as an interview with a Samaritan representative. Each narration offers an insightful, and very emotional, perspective on the different sides on those involved and/or affected by suicide.

The film was first unveiled at the Oxford University public health films screening, in Churchill Hospital, on Wednesday 3 February 2016. Alison Kahn, Lecturer in Film Production at Brookes, initially put forward the film to be shown, and arranged for the students to take part in a question and answer session at the end with the audience. With such a successful response, FullStop has since been nominated for an award at the Brighton Public Health Film Festival and internationally at Eskisehir Short Film Festival in Turkey.

Zeynep, the project’s director and cinematographer, expressed some of the difficulties the team faced: “The film's idea came from a question I’ve always had for many years, so not only was I doing my project, I was also learning. Ben, James and I put all our effort into the production of the film, which would include long and very exhausting days during the shooting process. There were a few obstacles, like weather conditions and communication problems with certain organisations, but we overcame all of them. The final product was an eye opener to everyone who has watched it. We have had very positive feedback from our teachers, close family and friends.

I was very confident in the film and sent them to film festivals. We have been nominated for an award in the Brighton Public Health Film Festival, Eskisehir Short Film Festival and just recently been nominated for the Nottingham Film Festival also.”

She also spoke of her time in Digital Media Production so far: “I had no previous media and film experience or qualifications in the subject area before I started. I have always been a Maths and Science person, but I had a strong passion for music and graphic design. After beginning the course, I knew it was the best decision of my life. Alison Kahn, Jon Dempsey and Nati Lopez were always there to help me when I needed assistance or guidance.”
