ABOUT PUBLISHING AT BROOKES
Angus Phillips, Director of OICPS
We are the largest department of publishing studies in Europe and are at the heart of the publishing industry in the UK. We are located in a major centre for publishing and through our advisory board we have extensive links with all the major UK publishers. We are unrivalled in the sort of work experience we can offer our students.
Working at the heart of the publishing industry
Much of our success derives from our extensive links with the publishing industry in the UK and internationally. All members of staff have worked in the publishing industry and continue their connections through their research and consultancy work.
We have excellent relationships with publishers and trade organisations, and our alumni are working throughout the industry. We are involved with industry awards and many visiting speakers contribute to our degree programmes. Our students have won prestigious external awards from a range of organisations and there are a variety of scholarships available through the department, the university, the Stationer’s Foundation and from Santander.
Our Industry Advisory Board provides the Centre with professional support from senior members of the publishing industry. The Board shares industry expertise in order to improve course development and delivery for the Centre's undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Members of the Board, who come from all sectors of the industry, from children's and magazine publishing to trade and educational publishing, give individual support to students and contribute to the Centre's activities.
International links with industry
The Centre's links with industry are a two-way street. University courses are supported by visiting lecturers from industry. At the same time the Centre provides professional development programmes and consultancy for the international industry. All these activities enhance the quality and currency of the mainstream courses offered at Oxford Brookes.
We work closely with publishing and related organisations to develop bespoke training programmes specifically suited to their requirements and business needs. We have a range of placements in other countries, carry out consultancy and training work around the world, and have international collaborations with many partners. We run international field trips for our students and our staff members have been invited speakers at many international conferences, both industry and academic, right around the world.
