The Confucius Institute at Oxford Brookes University
Confucius Institutes (CIs) are non-profit collaborations, which aim to provide Chinese language and cultural teaching resources and services worldwide, support local Chinese teaching internationally, and facilitate cultural exchanges. There are 500 Confucius Institutes throughout the world, with 29 in the UK.
On 19th September 2015, the Confucius Institute at Oxford Brookes University was approved by the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) in partnership with the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP) in China. Apart from the common aims, our CI uniquely concentrates on publishing - an area in which Oxford Brookes University enjoys an international reputation.
FLTRP is the largest English language teaching publisher and university press in China, ranking 3rd in sales turnover among all the publishing houses in China. It publishes in 47 languages with the majority of its publications in English and an increasing number of works in Chinese.
Mission and goals
- Chinese language and culture learning
Our Chinese language and culture classes start in September/October, 2016, including evening classes for students and the local community. We would also be pleased to offer customised classes for the local enterprises. The HSK (Chinese proficiency test) test centre will start from December, 2016.
China-themed activities and events are held for people to understand and experience Chinese traditional and contemporary culture. The upcoming October will see the Architecture Design Exhibition by Pan Gongkai, a renowned Chinese artist and architect, as well as his seminar on Painterly Abstraction in Architecture Design.
Our CI develops publications on Chinese language and culture in cooperation with presses worldwide. We also run publishing forums and training programs for international publishers.
