Bookbinding

Bookbinding Evening Class 2017/2018

Explore the basics for binding and repairing books.

This well established course has been running at Oxford Brookes for over 25 years. The non-vocational classes, tutored by widely experienced bookbinder and book conservator Ian Ross, provide an introduction to bookbinding, examining the techniques, materials and equipment needed to bind and repair books.

Traditional methods are considered in conjunction with practical alternatives. Enquiries regarding the course would be welcome if they are received during the summer, for September courses. This would ensure that we are able to create and plan a course tailored for your needs.

Introducing Ian Ross

Ian Ross

Ian has been teaching bookbinding since 1962 when Oxford Brookes was the College of Technology. He served a six-year apprenticeship at the Oxford University Press and was tutored by the internationally acclaimed bookbinder Ivor Robinson. In 1962 he was awarded City & Guilds of London Institutes final examination in general bookbinding. As a qualified journeyman bookbinder he occasionally served as a local examiner for City & Guilds craft examinations. In 1963 he was elected to membership of the Guild of Contemporary Bookbinders (later to become Designer Bookbinders). He has exhibited his fine bindings with the Guild, both in the UK and abroad. Several of his bindings are in private collections. In particular he was commissioned to produce two bindings for John Henry Brookes.
