Undergraduate Teaching

  • U65031 Publishing digital workflow
    This level 5 module allows students to study and practice page design and typography while exploring industry standard technologies such as Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop in more depth. Printed media is the focus for one of the assessed individual projects while production and web developments are addressed in the other two assignments.

Postgraduate Teaching

P65021 Design and Production (Design strand)
Design and Production are taught in separate strands in this compulsory master's level module which is delivered in Semester One. Lectures focus on design and typography issues primarily for books while workshops provide introductory and advanced level teaching in page layout and digital photography software for print and epub files. Assessment is through a project designing sample pages and a marketing document which is carried out in pairs. The project involves design and production to pdf of text and images around a subject selected by the students. Students successfully completing this module will have had the opportunity to develop and demonstrate a professional knowledge of industry standard production software such as InDesign, Photoshop and Acrobat.

P65033 and P65034
These compulsory modules provide students with opportunity to research either a dissertation or a major project for completion of the master's degree. Taught sessions include topics such as researching and writing literature reviews, selecting appropriate research strategies, conducting interviews and developing questionnaires for qualitative data and guidance on developing a proposal for the study. Individual supervisors are assigned to students for their projects or dissertations, while the modules are administered by Sally Hughes and her colleague Jane Potter.

P65055 Children's Publishing
In the UK, this market contributes approximately a third of all book sales. In response to the digital turn, publishers are agressively exploring transmedia story-telling and include ebooks for older children, apps for all ages and printed activity books to maintain sales. Agencies interested in promoting reading and various gatekeepers, such as parents, carers, teachers, booksellers and librarians all have an impact on the books children read. Children's Publishing is one of the optional modules available in Semester 2. The particular and varied influences on this competitive field of publishing make the study of educational publishing, YA fiction, comics, picture books, activity books, books for babies and non-fiction publishing a broad and challenging topic to encompass in a single module.  The approach is equally varied and changes from year to year with visiting speakers, group and individual assignments. Students study a variety of aspects of this fascinating and vibrant field of publishing with its constantly changing and demanding market.

Research

My research centres on publishing by museums and galleries and the role that books play in the representation of the institution, their curatorial authors and the visitors to museums who purchase this specialised form of publication. My current focus is publishing by museums in South Africa. I will be visiting selected institutions during May 2013 and will publish findings later this year.
